Completers of alternative teacher preparation programs are recommended for a teaching license in Minnesota.
Those choosing alternative teacher preparation programs must have a Bachelor’s Degree. Many are career-changers, and seeking meaningful work, enjoy working with students, and want to make a difference. Alternative preparation offers an opportunity to gain a license while working. Programs recognize the gifts and talents of teacher candidates:

By late 2025, MCATP programs had cumulatively enrolled 853 candidates and produced 513 license completers across Minnesota. Program pathways range from initial licensure in Elementary, Special Education, and Career & Technical Education to additional licenses in ESL and Special Education areas of EBD and ASD.
